The one about choosing the right email provider

We were at 500.000 users this spring. In the summer we hit 700.000. Now it’s mid-October and we’re going to be at 1.000.000 by the end of the year.

Everything has been going so fast, we haven’t implemented email yet. Meaning we don’t send out any welcome emails, upsells or offers. It hasn’t been a high priority. However at this point it will become more and more effective to use email.

We’re looking at different providers. If we’re doing a direct integration and bringing over 1mil users, we want to make sure we choose the right one and don’t have to switch in 6 months due to scaling issues.

I’ve been using MailChimp so far, but they get insanely expensive at that scale. Like thousands of dollars / month. ActiveCampaign is another option, but a quick search through the forums shows that they have issues handling contacts at scale. Not worth the risk. SendGrid might be a good option. Some of our friends who run companies with at 10mil – 100mil users use SendGrid as well.

Any ideas what’s the best option for scaling companies?
